2018 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival – Day 1 – Part 3

We are back to conclude the 3 part series covering our first day at the 2018 Epcot Internation Food & Wine Festival. Here are links to Part 1 and Part 2. Our next stop would be the Wine & Dine Studio.

We were starting to get full, and the wife wanted some scallops. We’ll definitely be back for the ravioli on a future visit.

Seared Scallops

The scallops here are always good, and today was no exception. The two scallops were suitably large and fresh, and the wild mushrooms were very flavorful and delicious.

Score: 8.5 out of 10

We didn’t have to walk very far to get to our next booth, the Cheese Studio.

Our bellies were getting full, so we didn’t order the cheesecake… this would prove to be a mistake! We had the Cheese trio last year, and while decent, once was enough.

Braised Beef “Stroganoff”

Braised Beef Stroganoff

This was one of our favorite items last year. This year’s version was a bit dry, and a smaller portion. But the flavors we liked last year were still present. A bit more of the cheese sauce would have helped.

Next, we went next door to the Chocolate Studio.

I’m not a big torte kind of guy, so we stuck with the truffle.

Liquid Nitro Chocolate-Almond Truffle

This has been one of the most popular items at the last few festivals. I enjoy it as well, but if I’m being honest, it just takes like chocolate ice cream to me. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

Score: 7.0 out of 10

We were really, really starting to get full at this point. But there were a couple more items that we absolutely had to try on day 1. So we persevered and continued on to Flavors from Fire.

If I wasn’t so full, I would have ordered all 3 food items. For this visit, we had to limit ourselves to the new steak dish. We’ll get the other items on a future visit.

Charred Chimichurri Skirt Steak

Charred Chimichurri Skirt Steak

I’m very conflicted about this dish. The steak was very good, with a bold smoky flavor. The corn cake was kind of gross… basically a layer of pasty mush. And the slaw didn’t work with the steak for me. So the steak would get an 8.5, the corn cake a 3.0, and the slaw a 6.0. Since the steak is so good, I’ll give the overall dish a…

We had one last booth to try before we hired a MinnieWheelBarrow to roll us out of Epcot… Taste Track!

Our main objective here was the Pancake Milkshake, but the regular croissant donut at Refreshment Port has always been one of my favorite snacks on Disney property, so I couldn’t resist getting one that’s been all gussied up.

Croissant Donut with Chocolate Hazelnut Cream

Croissant Donut with Chocolate Hazelnut Cream

This was very pretty, and tasted very good, if a bit too sweet. But the texture of the donut was way off. I assume it’s because they aren’t made fresh here like they typically are at Refreshment Port. The donut was extremely rubbery.

Score: 6.5 out of 10

Pancake Milkshake

Pancake Milkshake

This was sweet, but in a vaguely bland way. If anything, it tasted more like Birthday Cake than anything pancake related.

Score: 7.0 out of 10

So that sums up our first day at the 2018 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Overall, I’d say it was a very good day! There was only one real misstep, and several gems. I’ll list my must haves and must nots from day 1 below:

Must Have
Banana Almond Soft-Serve Sundae – Almond Orchard
Ropa Vieja Empanada – Islands of the Caribbean
Short Rib Tostada – Mexico
Seared Scallops – Wine and Dine Studio
Xi’an Pancake with Beef – China
Mango Bubble Tea – China

Danger! Danger!
Beef Brisket Poutine

Thanks for reading! We’ll be spending many more days at the Festival, and taking you along for the ride!
